Lets say I'm at a Starbucks watching a soccer game using their Wi-Fi on my iPhone or tablet. If a hacker decides to sniff on my connection, do they only see I'm watching the soccer game or can they hack and take control of my device?

It depends on the security of the device and whether or not Starbucks isolates individual devices on their guest network. If you're using an outdated device with no updates, and you're visible on the network you could potentially get got.

If also depends on the WiFi, of it is encrypted they can't see much. You should try to avoid open WiFi as it will expose all traffic that is not encrypted - unfortunately many apps on phone or tablet have poor security implementations.

If your phone is not completely patched, a hacker may be able to exploit and get in.

When using WiFi when you're in a public place I recommend using a VPN.
