My Thoughts

As some most of you know, Samsung Mobile USA announced the Galaxy S5 at their Unpacked Keynote at Mobile World Congress.  There was no "real" innovation (though the Finger Scanner as part of the display was pretty cool), nor "Wow Factor" to make me jump up for joy.

With that said, this is what I want to see in my next smartphone:

   * On Screen Navigation: I've hacked my Galaxy S4 running CyanogenMod  to have this.  It's such a better experience, IMHO.

   * Always Listening: Similar to Touchless Controls on the Motorola Mobility MotoX.

   * Display Based Notifications: Similar to Active Display on the MotoX.

   * Instant Updates:  Like the Nexus.  Though the MotoX was quick, it still hasn't rolled out to all carriers.

   * Low Power Motion Sensors: Again, the MotoX has this, but not sure about the next point.

   * HIL Support: All these new features depend a lot on the software stack.  Provide an open HIL so custom software can take advantage of the hardware, without the need for the stock ROM.

   * 1080p Display: This is where the MotoX falls short.  I would even take a battery hit for this.

   * High Quality Camera: Not just MPs, but quick AF and light sensitivity, and better flash.  (a. la. iPhone 5S).

   * IP67 (or better): Water/Dust resistance.

   * Carrier Unlocked and Global Ready (including Verizon): Though I will most likely be leaving VZW soon, I don't want to have to worry about buying new devices if I want to switch.

So, basically, I want a Galaxy Nexus X 5S.  Make it happen, Google!

Derek Duncan, the Phase Detection Autofocus is one of the things I liked about the S5.

Everything else is more evolution than innovation.  Still, they are some nice to have features.

From what I've read about the finger scanner from Ron Amadeo is that you have to do it "just right", else it might not work.  This is a fail in my book.  The way it was implemented on the iPhone 5S is better.  Less likely for the user to screw it up.

Also, one thing I forgot to mention in my original post was Qi Charging capable.  This is becoming a must.
