Some perspective on the announcement today about the new Google App review process.

1. This is not like Apple's review process as many of the apps will still be reviewed automatically but there seems to be an algorithm that will send an app to the review team to check..

2. Since Google has been doing this for the for several weeks and we all haven't noticed or seen stories from devs wondering why its taking so long for their app to roll out in Google Play it seems that the process is working flawlessly, Also Google has been doing this with Android Wear apps and Apps for education so they have some experience behind them

3. In my view the content rating is directed at helping parents control the apps their kids download as well as to make the play store more attractive (expect to see something about this at Google I/O). Connect the dots, Google acquired Launchpad toys a few weeks back, they have the upcoming viewmaster with mattel . Google wants to own the education market and the kids market, I just feel that this years Google I/O's theme is going to center on the family.

4. But content ratings can be problematic. From what I have read you can opt in to the content rating but of course if you don't the app may suffer in discoverability. I expect it to be come mandatory over time. Also I would like to get clarification on how Google will be working with the ESRB, PEGI etc. We could see content being blocked from certain regions as they do with console and PC games. Just recently the game hotline miami 2 was banned in Australia, could devs have certain apps banned as well?

5. Google is finally addressing the issue of apps being pulled from the store with little or no explanation which is good for devs and users.

I have seen a few people complain "look Google is becoming just like Apple". That is wrong on so many levels, the freedom we enjoy on Android is still there, but we all agree while the garden was nice it doesn't hurt to spruce it up a bit. Some of the unintended consequences of this change will become apparent as time goes on but for now I think this is a good move on Google's part.
