Oh man, I 've been waiting for this

Hangouts --> Settings --> SMS --> Send SMS from --> Google Voice

There is a weird bug that doesn't allow you to mark carrier messages as read.  They use the text input focus to mark the conversation as read, but it's disabled when you use this option.

Oddly enough, this still goes through as a carrier message.  >:-[

Thanks guys, yeah I knew of that setting but had to set it again. Hopefully I won't get anymore stragglers clinging to my TMo number but oh well, if they do I'll just tell them (again) to contact me on my GV #.

Oh and Joseph Cappellino thanks for the info on the weird bug

Joseph Cappellino Not that I can find or think of. I'll check again shortly. Using 2014 Moto X. Hangouts is the only SMS app I've used on this phone since I bought it. I only ever text using my Google Voice number, and Hangouts. Never use my carrier number. And I do use voice texting both from the Moto Voice app and Google Now. Both use my GV. I guess I'd recommend, if you haven't already, confirming your GV number through the Hangouts app, even if it doesn't seem like you'd need to.

Graham Wells Technically and objectively, not much. But for me, it's that it is available on Windows, OS X, iOS, Android and on the web. That excludes some 90% of all competing messaging apps including Whatsapp. In addition, I like how it integrates with GMail and Google+, meaning I have full and easy access to my full chat history of the last couple of years from within my GMail account and don't need to think where to search. Same for pictures, they are nicely sorted into a separate folder on Google+ Photos. Finally, if you have decided to trust Google (by using GMail, Google+ etc.), you don't need to entrust your conversation another third party (e.g. Facebook, which I trust less than Google).
