G+_Ken H
Oh man, I've been waiting for this. I'll finally not have to use only text messaging in the car when I use voice to text. Less confusion for people that message me in Hangouts but may not have it merged with their SMS http://goo.gl/paxF0V
G+_Joseph Cappellino
OMG, so much this!
G+_Paul Werner
Only thing they need now is to allow you to voice text using the Google Voice number for the contacts that I know do not use Hangouts or use it without SMS being merged. I only give out my GV number now and don't wanna send a text using my TMo number
G+_Joseph Cappellino
Same here. I think there is a way to setup Hangouts to only send via your GV Number, so it should work with voice input. I'll check and comment back.
G+_Paul Werner
Oh yeah there is something like that. I should set it back, I didn't at first because of some stragglers that were still texting my TMo number. Hopefully once that's set it will work with voice commands without error too
G+_Joseph Cappellino
Hangouts --> Settings --> SMS --> Send SMS from --> Google Voice There is a weird bug that doesn't allow you to mark carrier messages as read. They use the text input focus to mark the conversation as read, but it's disabled when you use this option. Oddly enough, this still goes through as a carrier message. >:-[
G+_Roy Delgado
Hangouts - > Settings - > SMS - > Send SMS from. Select your Google Voice number. Boom Bam. No more voice texts sent via your carrier number.
G+_Paul Werner
Thanks guys, yeah I knew of that setting but had to set it again. Hopefully I won't get anymore stragglers clinging to my TMo number but oh well, if they do I'll just tell them (again) to contact me on my GV #. Oh and Joseph Cappellino thanks for the info on the weird bug
G+_Joseph Cappellino
Roy Delgado - I just tried it, and it sent it via my TMo #. Maybe it was because I sent it to myself, it got a little freaky. I'll try toggling the value, and maybe it'll work again.
G+_Joseph Cappellino
Yep. Still from my carrier. Strange
G+_Paul Werner
Yeah that is strange. I'll try it out later too, hopefully mine doesn't do like yours is doing now
G+_Joseph Cappellino
I even tried to force merging of conversations (which has issues when choosing solely GV or carrier), but no dice. Roy Delgado, do you have any other settings that may affect this?
G+_Neil Sedlak
I got really excited then realized this was for the phone and not Android Wear. Wear should have had this at launch!
G+_Joseph Cappellino
Neil Sedlak, I think that it should work, though. Doesn't Wear just relay messages through to the phone?
G+_Neil Sedlak
Joseph Cappellino?? You can only reply to a Hangout message, you can send a new one. Since I use Hangout instead of SMS this is annoying. :) https://support.google.com/hangouts/answer/6060278?hl=en
G+_Roy Delgado
Joseph Cappellino Not that I can find or think of. I'll check again shortly. Using 2014 Moto X. Hangouts is the only SMS app I've used on this phone since I bought it. I only ever text using my Google Voice number, and Hangouts. Never use my carrier number. And I do use voice texting both from the Moto Voice app and Google Now. Both use my GV. I guess I'd recommend, if you haven't already, confirming your GV number through the Hangouts app, even if it doesn't seem like you'd need to. G+_Joseph Cappellino
Neil Sedlak - But, that may change with this update.
G+_Neil Sedlak
Joseph Cappellino? It works on the phone but not the watch. It might need an OS update on the watch.
G+_Paul Werner
Joseph Cappellino I just tried to send the text with voice after setting GV as the number to send all texts through and it still uses the carrier number for me too. I guess that isn't a function yet
G+_Philotech Mueller
When will it finally be possible to send videos using Hangouts? I hate Whatsapp and try to talk people into Hangouts, but sooner or later they ask how to send videos, and that's still not possible. WHY?? G+_Graham Wells
Can someone help me understand what makes hangouts better than any other messaging app?
G+_Philotech Mueller
Graham Wells Technically and objectively, not much. But for me, it's that it is available on Windows, OS X, iOS, Android and on the web. That excludes some 90% of all competing messaging apps including Whatsapp. In addition, I like how it integrates with GMail and Google+, meaning I have full and easy access to my full chat history of the last couple of years from within my GMail account and don't need to think where to search. Same for pictures, they are nicely sorted into a separate folder on Google+ Photos. Finally, if you have decided to trust Google (by using GMail, Google+ etc.), you don't need to entrust your conversation another third party (e.g. Facebook, which I trust less than Google). G+_Graham Wells
Good explanation Philotech Müller?. Thank you!
G+_Joseph Cappellino
Philotech Müller - I think you're able to send videos in Hangouts via the desktop app (it can select items from your albums). I don't think that's available for the mobile clients.
G+_Graham Wells
I'm a former iPhone use now carrion around a note 4. The only thing I really misses about my old phone is that I could send videos of any length via text and it wouldn't require that they be compressed and look like hell.
